Offer Letter Verification

How Payscore verifies an applicant's offer letter with the employer, what the results mean, and what's included in the report.

Written by Stephen Arifin

When an applicant provides a job offer letter as proof of upcoming income, Payscore reviews the document, extracts the relevant employment details, and attempts to verify the offer directly with the employer by email and phone.

You receive a report summarizing the document review and employer verification results to help support your leasing decision.

How it works

  1. The applicant uploads their offer letter during the income verification process. If Offer Letter Verification is enabled for your property, applicants will see an Upload an Offer Letter option at the end of their income verification workflow.

  2. Payscore extracts key information from the offer letter, including the applicant's name, employer, position, compensation, and expected start date.

  3. Payscore contacts the employer by email and phone to verify the employment details contained in the offer letter. Approximately 50% of employer verifications are completed within 24 hours, and 75% within 48 hours.

We continue outreach for up to three business days before concluding the verification attempt.

  4. While employer verification is in progress, Payscore uses AI-assisted analysis to evaluate the information contained in the offer letter. This includes reviewing publicly available business information and identifying any inconsistencies that may warrant additional review. These findings are included in the final report.

  5. You get the report. Once the verification process is complete, the Offer Letter Verification report becomes available alongside the applicant's other completed Payscore reports.

No additional action is required. Offer Letter Verification begins automatically after the applicant uploads an offer letter.

Where to find the report

When verification finishes, the offer letter report appears in the Completed Reports section for that applicant, with a button to download it.

The offer letter report will also be uploaded automatically to any integrations that are connected to your organization.

What the results mean

Result

What it means

Verified

The employer confirmed the offer. The report reflects the details they confirmed.

Unverifiable

We weren't able to reach the employer or get a response in time. The report is still produced with everything we gathered, and clearly notes that the offer couldn't be independently confirmed — so you can factor that into your decision.

Third-party required

The employer requires a third-party service (such as The Work Number) to verify employment.

Fraud

The employer or our checks indicate the offer letter isn't legitimate, or the applicant isn't actually employed there.

What's in the report

  • The original offer letter, attached

  • The details we read from the letter

  • The details the employer confirmed or corrected

  • The employer's confirmation — the name and title of the person who confirmed, and when

Frequently asked questions

How long does verification take?
Typically, 50% of our verifications are done in 24 hours, and 75% are done in 48 hours. It depends on how quickly the employer responds to our outreach.

What if the employer never responds?
The report is still produced with everything we gathered, and it clearly indicates the offer couldn't be independently confirmed. You can still use it to make your decision.

Will I see if the employer corrected a detail?
Yes. The report shows both what we originally read from the letter and what the employer confirmed or corrected, so any differences are easy to spot.

The offer letter doesn't list an HR contact. Can it still be verified?
Yes. We can locate employer contact information on our end and proceed with verification.

What if the uploaded document isn't actually an offer letter?
We'll detect that during review, and the report will explain why it didn't qualify. Just have the applicant re-upload the correct document.

Can I edit the details on the report?
The report can't be edited directly. If something needs to be corrected, reach out to our support team and we'll take care of it.
