What is rental history verification?
Rental history verification confirms where you've lived over the past two years. You tell us your previous addresses and, for any place you rented, who your landlord or property manager was. Payscore then contacts each landlord directly to confirm your tenancy dates, rent, and payment history.
This replaces the phone calls and reference letters that landlords traditionally ask for, so your application can move faster.
Why you're asked to do this
The property you're applying to wants to confirm your rental history from an independent source. Having Payscore handle it means:
You don't have to chase down references yourself
Your landlords fill out one short online form instead of taking phone calls
Results are shared securely with the property reviewing your application
What you'll need
Have this ready before you start:
The address and move-in and move-out dates for each place you've lived in the past two years
For each rental: your monthly rent and your landlord or property manager's name, phone number, and email address
If you don't have a landlord's direct email, a property management company's general email works. We need an email address to send them the form.
How it works
Sign the authorization. First, you'll review and sign a consent form. This gives Payscore permission to contact your landlords. Your landlords can view this signed form, so they know you approved the request.
Enter your residence history. Start with your current address, then add previous addresses until you've covered two years. For each one, choose your living situation: Rent, Own, Military housing, Friends or family, or Other. For rentals, add your rent and landlord contact details.
Submit. We email each landlord right away. You'll see a confirmation that requests were sent.
That's it. There's nothing more you need to do.
What happens next
Each landlord gets an email from Payscore with a secure link to a short form. If they don't respond, we send a reminder on each of the next two business days. We wait up to three business days for responses.
Once your landlords respond, or the three business days have passed, Payscore creates a report and shares it with the property reviewing your application.
It helps to let your landlords know to expect an email from [email protected].
Frequently asked questions
I own my home. Do I still need to do this?
Yes, but it only takes a moment. Enter your address and choose Own as your living situation. We won't contact anyone, and your verification completes right away.
I lived with family or friends and didn't pay rent.
Add the address and choose Friends or family. We don't ask for landlord details for these addresses.
I don't have my landlord's email address.
Try the property management company's general contact email or leasing office email. We can only reach landlords by email, so one is required for each rental.
I lived outside the United States.
That's fine. Enter the address with your postal code and country. Your landlord will receive the same email and form.
What does my landlord see?
Your name, the address you rented from them, and a link to your signed authorization. They're asked to confirm your move-in and move-out dates, your rent, and whether payments were on time.
What if my landlord doesn't respond?
After three business days, we create the report with whatever responses we received. It shows the information you provided and notes which residences couldn't be confirmed. You may want to give your landlord a heads-up so they respond in time.
Can I change something after I submit?
Not on your own. If you entered a wrong address or landlord email, contact Payscore support and we'll help.
Your privacy and security
Your information is encrypted and used only to complete this verification. Your landlords see only what they need to confirm your tenancy. The results are shared only with the property reviewing your application.
