Background Check: What It Is and What You'll Need

Learn why you're being asked to complete a background check, what you'll need, and what happens after you submit.

Written by Stephen Arifin

What is a background check?

The property you're applying to has asked Payscore to run a background check as part of your rental application. You confirm your details on a short form, and Payscore shares a Background Report with the property.

The check searches criminal records, the national sex offender registry, and government watchlists. It covers convictions and pending cases from the last seven years.

What you'll need

  • Your Social Security number

  • Your current address

Your name and date of birth carry over from your credit check. The form takes a few minutes.

How it works

  1. Open the email. You'll receive an email from [email protected] with the subject "[Property manager] requested a background check for your application". It arrives after your credit check is complete.

  2. Click Complete Background Check. The button opens a secure form.

  3. Confirm your information and provide your authorization. Review the disclosure and authorization forms for the background report, which are provided in accordance with FCRA requirements, and submit.

That's it. Your report is shared with the property once the searches are complete.

What happens next

Payscore shares the Background Report with the property reviewing your application. The property makes the decision on your application, not Payscore.

Your invitation is valid for two weeks. If you don't complete the form in that time, the link expires and the property is told the background check wasn't completed.

Frequently asked questions

I haven't received the email.
Check your spam or junk folder. The email is sent only after your credit check is complete. If you still can't find it, contact the property you're applying to.

My link expired.
Contact the property you're applying to. They can ask Payscore support to send you a new invitation.

Is my information safe?
Yes. You enter your details on a secure form, and your information is handled under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and used only for your application.

Can I see my results?
The property must share your report with you before making an adverse decision based on it. You can also create a Certn account to view your results.

Something on my report is wrong.
Your report was prepared by Certn, the consumer reporting agency. Contact Certn at [email protected] with the Case ID from the top right of your report, and they'll investigate.
