Identity verification helps confirm that an applicant is who they claim to be using a government-issued ID and selfie verification.

This article explains how identity verification works, what applicants receive, and what customers should expect.

How identity verification works

  • Applicants receive an email or link inviting them to complete identity verification

  • They scan a supported government-issued ID

  • They may be asked to take a selfie to confirm liveness

  • A verification report is generated for review

Invitations and expiration

  • Identity verification invitations expire after 14 days

  • Reports also expire after 14 days

  • If a verification request expires or needs to be re-sent after a failed attempt, a new verification request must be created

  • Automatic reminders are sent based on your verification configuration

Applicant requirements

To complete identity verification, applicants must provide:

  • An email address or a mobile phone number

  • A supported government-issued ID

  • A compatible device and browser

What an identity verification report looks like

Once an applicant completes identity verification, a report is generated showing the result.

When identity verification passes

A passed identity verification report indicates that:

  • The applicant’s government ID was successfully validated

  • Any required selfie checks were completed successfully

  • No issues were detected that require further review

The report will clearly show a Passed status, along with:

  • Applicant details

  • ID type used

  • Verification timestamps

When identity verification fails

A failed identity verification report means the system was unable to fully validate the applicant’s identity.

Common reasons include:

  • The ID is not valid or authentic

  • The ID submitted does not match the selected ID type

  • Inconsistencies in name, date of birth, or other ID details

  • Problems reading or validating the ID

  • Issues with selfie positioning or repetition

When a report fails:

  • The report will clearly show a Failed status

  • The failure reason(s) will be displayed

  • In some cases, the report will indicate whether the government ID passed but the selfie did not

Customers can use this information to decide whether to:

  • Ask the applicant to retry verification

  • Verify identity in person

  • Follow internal review policies
